Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer Lutheran Social Services is a non-profit organization, who in conjunction with HUD, operates a supportive living facility for adults with mental illness. The 11 tenants live independently in their own apartments, and their mental illness is well-controlled. The tenants would like to learn basic computer skills, for example navigating the internet, and setting up e-mail accounts.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer Mission Statement: Motivated by the compassion of Christ,we help people improve the quality of their lives.


What skills are required for this project?
Answer Knowledge of basic computer skills. A desire to work on an individual basis with adults. Also, the ability to work independently, with little supervision.


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer The students could enhance their computer skills, and know that they are providing an invaluable service to adults who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn computer skills. It would help them enhance their self esteem, and provide social and recreational time for them.


What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer I am available to the students Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 - 4:30. I am a social worker with Lutheran Social Services. Flexible times could be worked out with the student. A computer in the lobby at Sessions Street Apartments would be available for their use.

Answer Although there are 11 tenants usually only 4 or 5 are interested in working on the computer. They are very pleasant and co-operative and eager to learn. They are all have average or above average intelligence.
