Service-Learning Proposal Description

Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer The Bolton Refuge House Youth and Family Advocacy Team works in a variety of ways. Volunteers in this program might hold or play with a child while their protective parent works with an advocate, play games with children who need some extra attention, assist with our children's support group, or be available for a child who needs a kind person in their life. All members of our Child Advocacy Team must be 13 years or older and may not have any history of violent criminal activity.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer Bolton Refuge House Inc. creates safe space through programs and services for all persons impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault, and advocates for social change.

What skills are required for this project?
Answer No specific skills are needed for this project, but an interest in working with children and a basic understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault are helpful. Bolton Refuge House Staff is happy to train volunteers in areas that are unfamiliar.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer Students who volunteer their time will gain an in depth understanding of the dynamics associated with interpersonal and family violence and how these issues effect their community. Students will also gain experience in working independently, managing resources, working within teams, non-profit work, community relations, and working with high-risk children and youth.

What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer Students can volunteer during times that work with their schedule, but our greatest needs are Tuesday evening, Wednesday later afternoon/evening and Thursday evening.
